Filling & care

A step-by-step guide to filling your AutoKulmus fountain pen. The knob at the top of the pen controls the piston inside the barrel.

Before dipping: lower the piston fully. Submerge the whole ceramic nib, but no more than about 1 mm of the pen barrel.

  1. Lower the piston fully

With the pen out of the ink, twist the knob at the top to move the piston down towards the nib. Ensure the piston is fully down before submerging the pen.

  2. Submerge the whole nib

Place the nib in an inkwell containing enough ink to cover the entire nib. Only the very end of the barrel should enter the ink: no more than about 1 mm.

  3. Reverse the twist to draw in ink

Keep the nib submerged and twist the top knob in the opposite direction. The piston moves up, drawing ink into the pen barrel.

  4. Wipe the nib, ready to write

Lift the pen out of the inkwell. Use a damp cloth to gently wipe excess ink from the nib and any ink on the end of the barrel. Your kulmus is ready for writing.
